  • The flora and fauna of Lake Baikal is endemic by 65%. More than 1800 species of plants and animals have arisen in this lake and are not found in any other body of the Earth. Baikal is considered the center of origin of many groups of invertebrates. More than half of all species of oligochaetes, shell crustaceans and almost half of all species of freshwater mollusks live in it. Only a few of the Baikal endemic species are found in the Angara - the only river that flows from the lake.

    Lake Baikal, Irkutsk, Russia

  • Hello, I’d like to tell you about an amazing place on the map – about Lake Baikal. On the lake there are so many wonderful places, but I will tell you about the 2 most visited. They are Olkhon Island and Listvyanka village. Listvyanka Listvyanka got its name from the larch trees growing on the nearby Larch Cape. Listvyanka is located on the right side of the source of the Angara River and extends 5km along Lake Baikal. In Listvyanka, several streams and rivers flow into Baikal, the largest of which is Krestovaya. If you go to Listvyanka in the summer, be prepared that winter in Listvyanka is much milder, but summer is cooler. How to get there: every day a minibus taxi departs from the Trade Center. There is no schedule, the bus departs when it is filled. The fare is $ 2.20. Travel time is 1 hour. We are going to the first stop of the Baikal Museum. If you are a lover of alpine skiing, you can go to the ski base "Eastland". The cost of the lift and rental equipment is $2.29 -21.46. And if not, then we go further to Kulikov Street. Here you can visit the Baikal Museum of Gems, Retro Park, the Museum of Soviet Dolls. And try the omul in all its forms - hot and cold smoked, salty and dried! And grab some of it for friends and relatives. If you have to travel by plane, take the fish that is dried or cold smoked, packed in paper.

The Baikal seal is an endemic of Lake Baikal. To see the seal in nature is quite difficult. It is very shy. And in the Nerpinariy you can see this cute animal from all sides, and even enjoy the unusual performance. Nerpinariy is open according a schedule and the fee is $ 7.73. It is worth visiting the only lake museum in Russia - the Baikal Museum, created on the basis of the Limnological Institute. The exposition is devoted to the history of the study of the lake, its flora and fauna. The museum has 11 aquariums which are not found anywhere else in the world: water is supplied to them by means of pumps from a natural reservoir from a depth of 400 meters.

Museum aquariums are part of the lake itself - they contain 20 species of fish, 9 species of goby fish, 5 species of crustaceans, 3 species of sponges and 2 species of mollusks. In addition, in the museum you should visit the virtual exhibition “Immersion at the bottom of Baikal, or Bathyscaphe”, as well as look into the arboretum, the cost is $ 7.73. The museum is located at Akademicheskaya street, A and is open to visitors daily from 9:00 to 19:00 without days off. With an overnight stay, there should be no problems. There are a lot of hotels and private cabins. In a pinch, you can sleep in a tent. For one night per person the cost of the room will be 7.73 $ -76.65 $. You can also ride on an air cushion, 1 lap - 20 minutes per person is $ 7.73.

The next destination of our journey is Olkhon Island. Olkhon is called the heart of Baikal. It is considered a sacred territory, the center of shamanism of Central Asia. He is visited by pilgrims from around the world. According to a legend, it is here that Genghis Khan is buried. There are many places on the island where spirits are worshiped. Tourists, as a rule, get to the northern tip - Cape Khoboy, come to Cape Sagan-Shugun, drop in on the Mare Head. In the center of the island - the village of Khuzhir - there is a small ethnographic museum. All campers find the opportunity to talk with a real Baikal shaman and even order a ritual to expel evil spirits from him. To get to Olkhon from Irkutsk you need to get to the bus station or to the railway station of Irkutsk city and take a couch or a minibus. The journey time is 6-7 hours, taking into account the ferry crossing. The fee is 7.73 $ -15.33 $ depending on the type of transport

You can settle at the camp sites, in a tent camp (pay only for the place, there is rent), in private houses of the village Khuzhir and yurts of Pribaikalsky National Park. Price is from $ 7.23 per day, depending on the level of comfort. The largest settlement of the island is the village of Khuzhir, where about 1500 people live. The relief of Olkhon is diverse: • in the east rise ancient rocks covered with forest, • In the west, steppes and plains with small beaches off the coast.  Olkhon is a reserved area. To comply with all the rules, you will have to pay for visits to nature trails. This can be done at Olkhon itself - when you are thinking about Khoboy Cape or Hatha Pad ($ 1.37) per person. The office of the “Reserve Baikal Region” is located in the center of Khuzhir. You will be given a "receipt, which you will have to show to the state inspectors who patrol the territory. Khoboy Cape The flat stone slab of which Khoboy Cape is composed is in the northernmost part of the island. From here there are stunning views of Lake Baikal, from which it is breathtaking! In good weather, the Holy Nose Peninsula is visible from the top of the cape. In the outlines of the rocks you can see the image of a girl, as well as a naturally formed arch.

Khuzhir municipal museum named after N. M. Revyakin .The museum has collected archaeological material from more than 20 sites of ancient man, household items of the indigenous inhabitants of Olkhon Island - Buryats, the flora and fauna of Baikal, a collection of rocks and minerals, religious items, numismatics. The museum is open from 14: 00- 20:00 daily, except Mondays. The price per visit is about $ 1.53. The hotel has a shuttle bass service, which runs on a schedule four times a day. You can combine a trip to the museum with a walk to Burkhan Cape (Shamanka rock) and a delicious lunch at the Cafe Baikal View, with a beautiful view of Lake Baikal. There are also many wonderful places which you can visit yourself. I think you liked our small excursion booklet and you would like to go to Baikal one day. We will wait for you. See you! "Better to see once than hear a hundred times."
